भारतातील वैद्यकीय महाविद्यालयांत वैद्यकाचा इतिहास आवर्जून शिकवला जातोच असे नाही. या विषयावर भारतात फारच कमी लिखाण झाले आहे. मराठीतही काही लेखकांनी स्फुट स्वरूपाचे लेखन केले आहे. वैद्यकीय अभ्यासाच्या दृष्टीने महत्त्वाच्या असलेल्या या विषयावर डॉ. चंद्रकांत वागळे यांनी बराच अभ्यास करून ‘वैद्यकाची यशोगाथा’ आणि ‘आत्मा ते जनुक’ ही दोन पुस्तके लिहिली. ‘हिपोक्रॅटिसची शपथ’ या पुस्तकात वैद्यकातील महत्त्वाचे चर्चाविषय आणि अजरामर संशोधनकार्य करूनही प्रकाशझोतात नसलेल्या पाश्चात्त्य आणि काही भारतीय संशोधकांची ओळख डॉ. वागळे यांनी करून दिली आहे. वैद्यकीय व्यवसाय करणाऱ्या डॉक्टरचे वर्तन कसे असावे याबद्दल प्रत्येक वैद्यकप्रणालीतील पूर्वसुरींनी काही नीतिनियम, बंधने, काही सूचना आपल्या लेखनातून मांडल्या आहेत. चरक, सुश्रुत या भारतीय आचार्यांनी आपापल्या संहितांमध्ये तर ग्रीसमधल्या हिपोक्रॅटिस या रोगोपचारकाने वैद्यक व्यावसायिकांनी पाळावयाची आचारसंहिता स्पष्टपणे नोंदवून ठेवली आहे. विशेषतः वैद्यकीय व्यावसायिकांना नीतिमत्तेची जाणीव करून देऊन वैद्यकाला उदात्त पातळीवर नेण्याचे कार्य हिपोक्रॅटिसने केले. हिपोक्रॅटिस आणि इतर संशोधकांनी वैद्यकशास्त्राची दिलेली नीतिमत्तेची ही आचारसंहिता या पुस्तकातून वाचकांसमोर येते. त्याचबरोबर वैद्यकाच्या इतिहासाचा माहितीपूर्ण अभ्यास करण्याचा प्रयत्न ह्या छोटेखानी पुस्तकातून डॉक्टर वागळे यांनी केला आहे. या पुस्तकामुळे वैद्यकशास्त्राकडे बघण्याचा एक सजग दृष्टिकोन वाचकांना मिळेल. History of medicine is not necessarily taught in medical colleges in India. Very little has been written on this subject in India. Even in Marathi, some writers have written in a sphut form. Dr. on this important subject in terms of medical studies. Chandrakant Wagle wrote two books 'Vaidyakachi Yashogatha' and 'Atma Te Januk' after much study. In the book 'Oath of Hippocrates' Dr. Wagle has done it. Predecessors in each medical system have laid down some principles, restrictions, some suggestions in their writings about how the behavior of a doctor practicing medical profession should be. Charaka, Sushruta of India in their respective codes and Hippocrates of Greece have clearly recorded the code of conduct to be followed by medical professionals. In particular, Hippocrates worked to elevate medicine to a higher level by making medical professionals aware of ethics. This book presents the code of ethics of medicine given by Hippocrates and other researchers. At the same time, Doctor Wagle has tried to make an informative study of the history of medicine through this small book. This book will give the reader a thoughtful approach to medicine.
