Cultural Tourism and Bishnois of Rajasthan

Unique in concept and content, Cultural Tourism and Bishnois of Rajasthan is an exploration to engage the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan for eco-cultural tourism. The Bishnois are known as the first eco-warriors of the world. The five hundred years old ecological tradition of the Bishnois is not an offshoot of the current planetary crisis of global warming. The Bishnois have not desisted from sacrificing their lives to protect trees or deer. They have confronted the Maharajas in yesteryears and reigning film stars more recently. From where does such conviction arise and how can we use their wisdom? The book acquaints the reader with the beliefs and practices of the Bishnois through indigenous sources, vernacular literature, British census reports, and an ethnographic survey. It attempts to incorporate folk culture in an inclusive tourism model. Bishnoi tourism is presented as a way to showcase traditional ecological wisdom for the world at large.
