He entered the Indian Civil Service in 1887, and filled various positions, including those of Under-Secretary to the Governments of Bengal and India, Political Agent in Bikaner, General Superintendent of operations for the suppression of Thag, and Dacoity; Agent to the Governor-General in Central India Resident Hyderabad; Lieut. Governor, Eastern Bengal and Assam, 1911; Lieut-Governor of Bihar and Orissa, 1912. His works on Chiefs and Leading Families of Rajputana was very famous at that period.
