About the Book :-This concise and thoroughly researched book was written to make able, for the first time, the history of the British rule in Ceylon. This book is well planned and has 10 sections that notice : the British occupation of Ceylon; the administrative development (1796-1832); social and economic changes (1796-1832); the Colebrooke Commission and the Reforms (1832-33); the rise of plantations (1833-1850); development of the country (1851-1872); further development (1873-90); reorganization of government and legislature (1891-1913), and, the last section is on constitutional developments (1931-1948). This book was first published in 1952 About the Author:-Dr Garett Champness Mendis received his elementary and secondary education at Kingswood College Kandy which was founded by another pioneer in Sri Lankan History, L.E. Blaze. Dr Mendis was also a teacher in his old school and it was there that his love for history began. He was born to a Methodist family of Moratuwa, his father being a priest of their church. His first appointment in the public service was as a lecturer in the Ceylon Government Training College. His first book The Early History of Ceylon was based on the Thesis he wrote for his Phd which he obtained in 1931. It is needless to mention that he was a historian of universal fame who unraveled the labyrinthine mass of Sri Lanka ‘s history for oriental and occidental scholars. In Oriental history he was an outstanding product of the Universities of London and Munich. Generations of school children understood his interpretations of Lanka’s history which was put forward in clear, precise and simple terms. Among his outstanding works were The Early History of Ceylon(1940). An Historical Criticism of the Mahavamsa (1931).
