About the Book:- A descriptive account of the antiquities and coins of Afghanistan; with a memoir on the buildings called Topes by C. Masson. Written by the famous name in oriental, and Sanskrit studies – H.H. Wilson’s present work is one of the earliest thoroughly researched works on the classical region of Ariana - which includes Afghanistan and parts of boarding eastern Iran. Drawing on the initial efforts of Charter Masson, this meticulously planned work beings a note on Indo Bactiran coins, then follow notices of the Topes (Stupas) and sepulchral monuments; chapter 3 offers observations on the ancient Bactria. Chapter 4 – divided into 3 sections, is the concluding chapter. It gives the history of the various dynasties and Kings who have ruled this area from the time of the Greeks to the Sasanian king – i.e. pre -muslim conquest. Among the dynasties mentioned are Greek dynasties, barbarian Kings, Indo-Parthians, Indo-Scythians, and finally the Sassanian and Hindu coins. There are 22 plates in this work that show the antiquities, topes, a map of Ariana, table of characters, and coins. This work is a reprint of the 1841 edition. About the Author:-Horace Hayman Wilson was an English orientalist. He studied medicine at St Thomas's Hospital, and went out to India in 1808 as assistant-surgeon on the Bengal establishment of the British East India Company. His knowledge of metallurgy caused him to be attached to the mint at Calcutta, where he was for a time associated with John Leyden. He acted for many years as secretary to the committee of public instruction, and superintended the studies of the Sanskrit College in Calcutta. He was one of the staunchest opponents of the proposal that English should be made the sole medium of instruction in native schools, and became for a time the object of bitter attacks.Wilson became deeply interested in the ancient language and literature of India, and was the first person to translate the Rigveda into English. In 1813 he published the Sanskrit text with a free translation in English rhymed verse of Kalidasa's lyrical poem, the Meghaduuta, or Cloud-Messenger. He prepared the first Sanskrit-English Dictionary (1819) from materials compiled by native scholars, supplemented by his own researches.
