Product description
About the Book: - The narrator of this narrative has collected all the materials in Ceylon, principally from Kandyan chiefs high in office, and conversant with business, and who were constantly in attendance at the court of the dethroned monarch, during a residence on that station, on the Medical Staff of the Army, from August, 1816, to February, 1820. It is sufficient to mention, that the narrative of Travels, which constitutes the Second Part, is introduced with the design of illustrating the preceding topics, and for the purpose of describing the scenery of the country, and that the medical sketch relative to the climate and its diseases, and the preservation of health, which concludes the work, is not offered to the professional so much as to the general reader. The book is the product of the extensive study of the Ceylon cultural heritage. The subject of the book is very interesting. There is no statement in the book to which exception may justly be taken. The illustrations and maps require a word of explanation which he preserves from oblivion to make the script beneficial for all. About the Author: - John Davy was a Cornish doctor, amateur chemist, brother of the noted chemist Sir Humphry Davy, and cousin of Edmund Davy. Upon qualification as a doctor in 1815, Davy joined the British Army Medical Department as an Army Hospital Assistant. From 1816 until 1820 he worked as Staff Surgeon in the General Hospital in Brussels. After being posted to a number of the English colonies, including India and Ceylon, he was elevated to the rank of Inspector General of Army Hospitals in the West Indies in 1862, based around Barbados.
