This racy 2 volumes work by a Frenchman is a travelogue, kept in the form of a diary, of his overland travels from Paris to the Gulf of Tonkin in what was Indo-China. Being a keen observer, he records and describes with a vivid pen all that he saw, heard, learnt, and experienced on this journey. The narrative is full of anecdotes about his camp life, as well as of the people, customs, cultures, villages and towns, that he encountered on his journey. Starting from Paris in January 1889, he went to Moscow; and from there he went across the Urals to Djarkent. It is from here, that on the 2nd of September he commenced his journey. Travelling south, he crosses Khirghiz territories, and then reached Tibet. Not visiting Lhasa, he turns west near Tengri Nor. Reaching south western China at Ta Chen La, he turns south and makes his way to sea via Kun Nan-Fu, and Hanoi. His journey ended on the 25th of September, 1890. The set is replete with charming illustrations made from photographs that the author’s companion, Prince Henry of Orleans, took along the way. A map of the journey is included in this set which was first published in 1891. About the Author : - Pierre Gabreil Édouard Bonvalot was a French explorer of Central Asia and Tibet. He visited Russian controlled Central Asia and returned to France via Bukhara, the Caspian Sea, and the Caucasus in 1880–82. His travels were financed by the Minister of Public Instruction. He set out for Russian Central Asia with Guillaume Capus, a botanist, ethnographer, and doctor of natural sciences, and designer Albert Pépin in 1886. In 1889 Bonvalot was one of the first Europeans to visit the Tibetan plateau. The expedition was financed by the Duke of Chartres and his son, Prince Henri of Orléans, who accompanied Bonvalot. His original plan was to cross Asia and reach Tonkin in French Indo China. Bonvalot wanted to cross Europe and Russia by train and then continue on foot and horseback to the border with Chinese Turkestan. Bonvalot then wanted to be the first European to cross the Gobi and Lop Nor deserts. He thought that he could then cut across the Tibetan plateau and try to visit Lhasa, which had been closed to foreigners for the last half a century.
