A History of English Education in India

Through this work, the object of the author has been to furnish a full history of the early origin, gradual growth, internal development, and present condition of the English education among the natives of India, together with the various phases of policy which it has undergone, and the various measures which have been adopted, from time to time, in this behalf, by the Government. The present work seeks to avoid all controversial discussion or polemical arguments. Its aim is to narrate as fully, clearly, and simply as possible all the various facts, opinions, measures which any person, interested in the cause of English education in India, would like to know in order to form his own opinion or adopt measures for promoting that education in the future. The subject of primary and secondary English education has been only indirectly touched upon in this work. High English education is the main theme of this work. Justice Syed Mahmood was Puisne Judge of the High Court, North-Western Provinces from 1887 to 1893, after having served in the High Court in a temporary capacity as officiating judge on four previous periods since 1882. He was the first Indian jurist to be appointed to High Court at Allahabad, and the first Muslim to serve as a High Court judge in the British Raj. Syed Mahmood was born in Delhi in 1850. He subsequently studied in Moradabad and Aligarh, all cities to which his father had been posted as a member of the Indian Civil Service. He also studied at the Government College in Delhi and at Queen's College in Benares before passing his Matriculation Examination at the University of Calcutta in 1868. He then received a scholarship from the British government in India to study in England. As a jurist, his judgments dominated the Indian Law Reports.
