About the Book:-In submitting this new edition of the Punjabi Guide, the author would beg to state that it has been made as clear and as simple as possible in the hope that those who reside at great distances from any practical Munshi may find it almost a self-teacher. Many new words and rules have been added and old ones more simply explained, and he hopes that it will meet with as cordial a reception as the first edition. In conclusion he would give the student the following few words of advice that is when learning words by heart, without which a knowledge of the language cannot be obtained, he should advise pupils to be specially careful in writing down all words resembling one another such as chhutti- leave, chitthi- letter, cheta- recollection, cheti- quickly etc. And when a word comes under notice find out all other words connected with, it writes them down, and learns thoroughly. In this way a thorough and lasting knowledge of the words in most common use will be obtained. This book is immensely beneficial in the context of this language. About the Author:-Jawahir Singh was an Indian-born (1859-1910) Punjabi author. He was a leading figure in the Singh Sabha movement, was the son of Bhai Anna Singh Kapur of Gujranwala, now in Pakistan. He was born at Amritsar in 1859. After finishing school, he entered service in the accounts department of the North Western Railway in 1876, and making steady progress rose to be the superintendent in the Manager’s office in 1903. In 1882, he attended law classes of the University of the Panjab, but did not continue to complete the course. In 1886, he applied for the position of a Granthi at the Harimandar at Amritsar, but his candidature was rejected owing to his earlier religious affiliations. He has 18 works in 43 publications in 2 languages and 89 library holdings to his credit. His genres of works are self-instruction, dictionaries, and history.
