H. Marshall, Director-General of Archaeology in India, who during two seasons personally conducted the excavations on this important Buddhist site. The plans were prepared by James Ransome, late Consulting Architect to the Government of India. As at the end of the cold season of 1908-09, when the building was nearly completed, Dr Marshall proceeded home on long leave, it fell to the author task to take measures for the proper arrangement of the sculptures in the new quarters. The work of arranging and labelling was done in the cold season following under the personal supervision of Lala Daya Ram Sahni, who had taken an active part in Dr. Marshall's explorations, and was, therefore, well qualified for the task. At the same time he prepared a catalogue of the exhibits which is now offered to the public. The labels on the objects themselves are of necessity very brief, and it has, therefore, been their aim in the present catalogue to embody all information which may be of interest both to the dilettante and to the expert. The order followed in listing the exhibits are chiefly chronological. It contains 29 fine plates to delineate this subject properly. About the Author:-Rai Bahadur Daya Ram Sahni CIE (1879 – 1939) was an Indian archaeologist who supervised the excavation of the Indus valley site at Harappa in 1921-22. A protégé of John Marshall, in 1931, Sahni became the first Indian to be appointed Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a position in which he served till 1935. He hailed from the city of Bhera in Shahpur district, Punjab where he was born on 16th December 1879. He graduated in Sanskrit from the Punjab University with a gold medal. He also topped the M. A. examination from the Oriental College in 1903. As a result of these accomplishments, Sahni won the Sanskrit scholarship sponsored by the Archaeological Survey of India and recruited by the survey on completion of his education. In 1903, Sahni was posted to the Punjab and United Provinces circle where he worked under J. Ph. Vogel. Sahni was involved in the excavation of Kasia in 1905 and Rajgir in Bihar under John Marshall in January–February 1906. In September 1907, Sahni assisted Marshall in the excavation of a stupa at Rampurva in Champaran district. He also prepared a catalogue of archaeological ruins at Sarnath. Though he will not say it has been the most important business of his life, it certainly has been its most important recreation, and he has derived from it more enjoyment than from perhaps any other source. He began the study some fifty years ago, at the time when t he geni us of Pr i ns ep wasrecreating, and breathing fresh life into the chaotic mass of idle fables, which, before his time, represented the history and doct r i nes of Buddhi s m. Thechronology of the sect and the biography of its founder were then daily assuming shape and becoming clearer; but little had been done to ascertain what their architecture had been, or to discriminate what really belonged respectively to Buddhism, to the Jains or to the Hindus, still less had the origin of these various forms been traced, or how they arose, and what their influence was on each other. What little had been attempted, was of the haziest and most tentative character. The book contains 4 chapters and 11 woodcuts and it is good for researcher point of view. About the Author:-James Fergusson, (1808-1886) son of Dr. William Fergusson; born in Janyary 22, 1808. He was educated at the Edinburgh High School, and also privately. He was a Scottish writer on architecture and mythology. He came to India first into business at Calcutta and in ten years at his indigo factory made sufficient to retire upon. Between 1835 and 1842 he travelled widely in India to study styles of architecture. He left for his country in 1845. The author has commented upon the predominantly narrative character of the bas reliefs with which he is dealing: it may indeed be said that, apart from purely decorative figures and symbols, the great bulk of them are illustrations of scenes from the life of the Buddha. A history of Buddhist Art is a task for the future; may we someday have the pleasure of welcoming a systematic treatise upon the subject from the author’s own pen. For the present we are only at the commencement. Nothing guarantees us that in its beginnings the Art shall be found on a level with the doctrine, or that it shall follow a parallel course, or again that it shall develop with a proportional rapidity. This volume, originally written in French, is a collection of his essays and addresses in various serial and periodical publications. It contains nine informative essays on this subject. They are: The beginnings of Buddhist art, The representations of Jatakas on the bas-reliefs of Barhut, Eastern Gate of the Sanchi Stupa, Checture at the Musee Guimet, Greek origin of the image of Buddha, The tulelary pair in Gaul and in India, The Great Miracle at Cravasti, The six tusked elephant, Buddhist art in Java and, Buddhist Maddona. The book has 50 plates and was first published in 1917. About the Author:-Alfred Charles Auguste Foucher, a French scholar, identified the Buddha image as having Greek origins. He has been called the ‘father of Gandhara studies’, and is a much cited scholar on ancient Buddhism in northwest Indian subcontinent and the Hindu Kush region. He made his first trip to northeastern India in 1895. In 1922 he was asked by the governments of France and Afghanistan to organize an archeological co-operative which became the Délégation archéologique française en Afghanistan.Foucher especially considered Hellenistic free-standing Buddhas as \"the most beautiful, and probably the most ancient of the Buddhas\", assigning them to the 1st century BCE, and making them the starting point of the anthropomorphic representations of the Buddha.
