In this landmark book, bestselling author, leadership coach and mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik shows how, despite its veneer of objectivity, modern management is rooted in Western beliefs and obsessed with accomplishing rigid objectives and increasing shareholder value. By contrast, the Indian way of doing business, as apparent in Indian mythology but no longer seen in practice accommodates subjectivity and diversity and offers an inclusive, more empathetic way of achieving success. Great value is placed on darshan, that is, on how we see the world and our relationship with Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Business Sutra uses stories, symbols and rituals drawn from Hindu, Jain and Buddhist mythology to understand a wide variety of business situations that range from running a successful tea stall to nurturing talent in a large multinational corporation. At the heart of the book is a compelling premise: if we believe that wealth needs to be chased, the workplace becomes a rana-bhoomi - a battleground of investors, regulators, employers, employees, vendors, competitors and customers, if we believe that wealth needs to be attracted, the workplace becomes a ranga-bhoomi - a playground where everyone is happy. Book Features: By Devdutt Pattanaik, the author of more than a dozen bestselling books on mythology and management, leading columnist for business newspapers and one of the country's foremost motivational speakers The book takes a practical and distinctive look at management and business practices, using stories, symbols and rituals from Hindu, Jain and Buddhist mythologies Devdutt Pattanaik hosted widely popular TV show Business Sutra on CNBC. His TED talk on mythology and management received over 8, 10,000 hits online Business Sutra carries creative and informative illustrations by the author that elaborate the concepts being discussed Plenty of insightful anecdotes and examples of people from all walks of life that readers can relate to Booklets with excerpts, business cards, posters and an extensive tour by the author to top management institutes, business schools and leading corporations as part of the marketing plan to promote the book

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0355/1415/5141/products/9789384067540_9ae772dd-32f6-45ba-81e7-fca8f5c7e3e1.jpg?v=1680025859
decoding-business-minds
DECODING BUSINESS MINDS

This is a manifesto to change a country where a Master of BusinessAdministration (MBA) is primarily to get a job,and not to start a business!Serial entrepreneur Ajay Gupta is the quintessential Indian businessman.He has spent more than three decades in businesses creating companiesthat have grown despite numerous obstacles and challenges that came fromwithin the entrepreneurial ecosystem, but more so from a societal mindsetthat has origins in the British Raj.Thinking of a business as a lifelong career does not come naturally to mostIndians. Most large business houses are Marwari—including Birla, Bajaj, Dalmia and Singhania. But very little is known or understood about this community. This book fills in this gap. It narrates the rise and expansion of Marwari family. The origins lie in a small village in Rajasthan where the family was engaged in lending seed to the farmers. One of the members sought new opportunities in the city. The book explains how he built a business empire single-handedly. The transition from trade to industry is also described. The book is unique in explaining the inner working of the Marwari family. How the relations between brothers in a joint family are managed-and broken. The attitude to charity, education, women and workers are explained. This book is an essential reading for those who want to understand how a Marwari family functions. About The Author:- V.D. Jhunjhunwala inherited a newly built business-in-crisis at the age of twenty. He single-handedly salvaged the industry from virtual ruin. Educated only up to class six, he rose to become the President of Indian Sugar Mills Association. He continues to manage a refractory unit at the ripe age of 78. He continues to take active interest in the public affairs of Malsisar-the village where he was born. HOW SPORTS MARKETING HAS BOWLED US OVER Sports marketing is all-pervasive today – no matter where you look, there is no escaping a Dhoni, a Tendulkar or a Sehwag. It wasn’t always like this. There was a time when sportspersons got fame from sport, but not the money commensurate with that fame. Then Sunil Gavaskar, India’s first batsman-entrepreneur, came along, and in his wake followed Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar. Helped by television and competing multinational brands vying to expand their market in a liberalizing India, sports marketing, which in India is synonymous with cricket, exploded. The culmination of this process was the Indian Premier League (IPL), a brilliant marketing concept that was a win-win for players, sponsors, media and viewers alike. This book, written by two sports enthusiasts who are also ace sports marketers with a combined international experience of forty years in marketing, takes us on an engaging and informative journey through the highs and lows of sports marketing in India. Along the way, the authors explain what constitutes good sports marketing, how the market can be expanded, what the prospects are for sports other than cricket, and why the sports fan needs to be better treated. An incisive, heartfelt book that will appeal to sports fans, marketers, advertisers as well as administrators. Raman, the numbers don’t lie. Decades of witnessing the inner workings of India’s healthcare industry first-hand have given him ample reason to question and challenge it.In Sick Business, through personal accounts of patients, interviews with doctors and other medical professionals, and numerous reports, he unveils a chilling portrait of a healthcare system marred by vested interests, shady research, lax State intent, questionable ethics and general disarray. Overburdened public hospitals, expensive private healthcare, a rampant culture of quacks, the nexus between big pharma and doctors, a silent epidemic of surgeries and over-diagnosis-the book deals with such burning topics and more as it uncovers the truth behind the pristine façade of hospitals and the doctors who work within.Sick Business is a clarion call for reform and change. Usually, blame for business failures is apportioned to external factors such as adverse business cycles, badly framed government regulations and lack of infrastructure. However, the causes often lie within — short-term thinking, destruction of natural resources, exploitation of labour and poor management, to name a few. To outlast their competition, build resilience, gain competitive advantage and achieve greater returns in the long run, businesses must improve their performance on material ESG metrics: Environmental impacts such as monitoring their consumption of natural resources, waste discharge and carbon emissions; Social factors such as ties with local communities, diversity and inclusion, and building a good reputation with stakeholders; and Governance, including board effectiveness protocols, approach to senior executive compensation and appropriate reliance on independent directors. The benefits from implementing ESG factors include more efficient use of resources, lower cost of operations, reduced risk, higher employee productivity and increased investor interest. Outlast: How ESG Can Benefit Your Business is a clarion call to corporate leaders to follow the pathway of ESG. The authors, Mukund Rajan and Col. Rajeev Kumar, draw upon their considerable experience of working for some of India’s largest organizations to present evidence and case studies that show that ESG is the mantra of the future. This is a timely must-read for all those who belong to, or aspire to be part of, the corporate world. What lessons has it learnt? Why did Vedanta Resources Plc insist on mining in the Niyamgiri Hills in the face of opposition from the tribal inhabitants of the region who fear desecration of their god and losing their land and home? How valid are the safety concerns of the residents of Kudankulam protesting against a nuclear power plant? What gives a global giant like Posco the ability to ride over local sentiments in acquiring land for their mammoth steel plant in Odisha?There is growing discontent over the manner in which governments and businesses in India treat communities and stakeholders. Presumption, arrogance, suspicion and deceit often hold sway over community engagement and holistic human resource development. Disaffection of project-affected communities over issues of land acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation has emerged as a major threat to economic growth in India, besides adding to the cost of businesses on account of lost opportunities, delays and liability. Driven to the wall, the world of business is finally waking up to the idea of human rights, of true corporate social responsibility.This book offers a must-do checklist for human rights, and for responsible business planning and policy-making. Sudeep Chakravarti speaks to senior executives, policymakers, activists, lawyers and local communities across such conflict zones in India to present a ringside view of the present and future of business and human rights. He breathes fresh understanding into some of the biggest human rights flashpoints in recent years – Vedanta, Tata Steel, Posco, Kudankulam – as well as less visible ones, and numerous forgotten projects, places and people that continue to haunt the development story of twenty-first century India.Clear. Abdul Kalam, Former President of India In 1976, Dr Govindappa Venkataswamy founded Aravind, an 11-bed eye clinic in south India, with no money, business plan or safety net. Dr V was 58 years old at the time, and over the next three decades his humble clinic would defy the odds to become the largest provider of eye care in the world. Aravind has now treated over 32 million patients and performed over 4 million surgeries, the majority for free. Its business model is emulated everywhere from Tanzania to the United States, and a case study on Aravind’s work is mandatory reading for every MBA student at Harvard Business School. Why do some start-ups attract large investments while others do not? Aswath Damodaran, finance professor and experienced investor, argues that the power of story drives corporate value, adding substance to numbers and persuading even cautious investors to take risks. In business, there are the storytellers who spin compelling narratives and the number-crunchers who construct meaningful models and accounts. Both are essential to success, but only by combining the two, Damodaran argues, can a business deliver and sustain value. Damodaran considers Uber’s debut and how narrative is key to understanding different valuations. He investigates why Twitter and Facebook were valued in the billions of dollars at their public offerings, and why one (Twitter) has stagnated while the other (Facebook) has grown. He also looks at more established business models such as Apple and Amazon to demonstrate how a company’s history can both enrich and constrain its narrative. Narrative and Numbers reveals the benefits, challenges, and pitfalls of weaving narratives around numbers and how one can best test a story’s plausibility.Pages: 296 Available in: PaperbackLanguage: EnglishTAGSBestsellersHarper BusinessEconomics, Finance, Business and Management
‘Brilliant and insightful ...
