About the Book:-The author of the following work participated in this opinion, and anxiously wished to be present at the approaching campaign, for the purpose of acquiring, in the ranks of the British army, that military experience, which a long peace had prevented him from obtaining in the army of his own country. The main purpose of his journey having unhappily been thus defeated, by circumstances over which he had no control, it seemed to be an imperative duty to do all that was still in his power to make himself acquainted with that remarkable country, which has been visited by very few of his countrymen. If he has not taken the fullest advantage of the favourable opportunity which he enjoyed, the fault must be attributed to the shortness of the time rather than to any remissness on the part of the author, who met with treasures far beyond his hopes, which, though fully able to appreciate, he could not in every case turn to account. He relates plainly and faithfully, what he saw and felt, and, to supply the deficiency of actual observation, he has added other matter which he heard and learnt from men of unimpeachable credit. So both the volumes of the travelogue are very important in the historical point of view. About the Author :-Leopold Ludwig von Orlich was a Prussian officer and author. He was an officer in the Prussian Kaiser Alexander Regiment. Even as a lieutenant, he wrote historical works that were published. He attended lectures and wrote with Carl Ritter and Alexander von Humboldt. In 1842 he was authorized to join the British Army in India as a captain. He traveled to the front with reinforcements, but the war was over when he got there. In early 1843 he accompanied Maddock the representative of the governor of India to Lahore at the court of the Maharajah of Punjab. He published his experiences in India in the book “Travel in India”, one of the first books to be illustrated with color plates in Germany. He took his leave as a major in 1848. Hannibal Evans Lloyd was an English linguist and translator. He was a contributor to the Literary Gazette from its founding in 1817, mainly on archæology and the fine arts. A friend of Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, Lloyd translated with him most of Der Messias, but did not publish his version. He also knew Christoph Daniel Ebeling well, and wrote his obituary for the Gazette. He reviewed German books for the Foreign Quarterly Review.
