About the Book:- The author has prepared the text of this rare book on the basis of the following account of a journey across Tibet and China which he took in 1896. It has been his object to describe in a simple manner all that he did and saw from beginning to end, in the hope that some future traveller may learn, not so much what he ought to do, as what he ought not to do. There are notices on the people, anecdotes and accounts of their daily life, customs, folklore, local politics, geographical and metrological readings, personal experiences, interactions with friendly, and hostile, natives, etc. Should others, by chance, find some little interest in perusing these pages, and be tempted to taste for themselves the sweets of wandering through little known lands, they will be recompensed for doing so and the writer shall have found his reward. To those who patiently read to the end and close the book with a feeling of disappointment, he would appeal for leniency. There are 79 photographs in this book, which was first published in 1898. About the Author:- Captain Montagu Sinclair Wellby (1866-1900) was already a veteran of several exploratory expeditions when he set out from the Abyssinian (now Ethiopian) capital Addis Ababa on his marathon journey in December 1898. Along the way he produced a series of nineteen manuscript maps, devotedly compiled in coloured inks and watercolour. His aim was to extend British influence in the largely uncharted area of southern Abyssinia. Having secured Menelik’s advocacy, Wellby assembled a caravan that comprised forty-three locally recruited labourers and an entourage of well loaded mules, ponies, donkeys, camels and sheep. Also included was the highly capable Daffadar Shahzad Mir, seconded from the Survey of India and with whom he had worked on an earlier expedition from Tibet to Peking (now Beijing).
