About the Author:-One of the first pilgrims to travel to India from China, Hiuen-Tsiang was a monk whose journeys brought him in close contact with India's flourishing Buddhist culture, giving him a deep understanding of the political, social, and economic scenarios of the country. After a 2-year study period in northwest India, he sailed down the Ganges to visit the holy land of Buddhism. His itinerary included Kapilavastu, the birthplace of Buddha; Benares; Sarnath, where Buddha delivered his first sermon; and Bodhgaya, where Buddha attained his nirvana under the bodhi tree. 'History of the early life of Hiuen Tsiang and his travels in the western world was written by the Shamn Hwui Li. The author has translated the book from the Chinese language with an introduction containing an account of the works of Hiuen-Tsiang and a preface by L. Cranmer-Bying. The book is based on his records of journey in India and other parts of the world. About the Author:-Samuel Beal was an Oriental scholar, and the first Englishman to translate directly from the Chinese the early records of Buddhism, thus illuminating Indian history. From 1848-50 he was headmaster of Bramham College, Yorkshire. He was ordained deacon in 1850, and priest in the following year. After serving as curate at Brooke in Norfolk and Sopley in Hampshire, he applied for the office of naval chaplain, and was appointed to H.M.S. Sybille (1847) during the China War of 1856–58. He was chaplain to the Marine Artillery and later to Pembroke and Devonport dockyards 1873–77. His reputation was established by his series of works which traced the travels of the Chinese Buddhists in India from the fifth to the seventh centuries AD, and by his books on Buddhism, which have become classics.
