About the book- Sikkim Located in the northeast part of India, is a paradise for ornithologist. Bird of Sikkim shows a total of 524 species. Salim Ali extensively reviewed the part studies substantiated field surveys and published a book containing a comprehensive lest of species distributed in Sikkim. The basic information of ecology of some species is also provided certain well-known migrants such as wild ducks and geese can be seen passing over Sikkim regularly in autumn and spring, and some other species are known to spend the winter or a part of that season at lower altitude. The Lachen valley is reputedly a traditional flyway for duck and geese at least on the northward direction in spring. Several other pecies of duck fly over Sikkim on their autumn and spring migrations, but owing to the absence of suitable shallow Jheels very few stop over and only transitory. About The Author -: Salim Ali was born into a Sulaimani Bohra family in Bombay on 12th of November 1896. He was introduced to the serious study of birds by W. S. Millard Secretary of the Bombay Natural Hisotry Society, he identified an unusually coloured sparrow (yellow-throated sparrow). He was the first Indian to conduct systematic bird surveys across India and wrote several bird books that popularized ornithology in India, created the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary (Keoladeo National Park) and prevent the destruction of what is now the Sailent Valley National Park. Allong with Sidney Dillon Ripley, he wrote the Landmark ten volume Handbook of the birds of India and Pakistan. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1958, and the Padma Vibhushan in 1976. Several species of birds, Salim Ali’s Fruit bat, a couple of bird sanctuary and institutions have been named after him. Sometimes referred to as the Birdman of India, an Indian Ornithologist and Naturalist took his breath last on 20th June 1987 (aged 90) in Bombay.
