Product description
The study of ANATOMYas it leads to the knowledge of nature and the art of healing, needs not many tedious descriptions nor minute dissections; what is most worth knowing is soonest learned, and least the subject of disputes. This edition is a tenth part larger than the former, not increased by descriptions but by observations upon the uses and the mechanism of the parts, with operations and cases in surgery. The plates are more in number, larger, better designed, and better executed than those which were in the former editions. The print in the title page represents a person drawing in a camera obscura. The frontispiece represents the story of Hippocrates going to cure Democrates of madness, but finding him dissecting, to discover the seat of the Bile, he pronounced him the wisest man in Abdera. In this edition, some observations and cases in surgery, with prints of operations and a set of surgical instruments are published. William Cheselden, born on19 October 1688,was a British surgeon and teacher of anatomy and surgery who wrote Anatomy of the Human Body (1713) and Osteographia, or the Anatomy of the Bones (1733). The former was used as a text by anatomy students for nearly a century. Cheselden was apprenticed to Mr. Wilkes, a surgeon of Leicester. He also studied under the anatomist William Cowper in 1703 and under James Ferne, a surgeon and lithotomist at St. Thomas’ Hospital. By 1711, he was already established as a lecturer in anatomy. Cheselden was named assistant surgeon at St. Thomas’ in 1718 and was elected one of the institution’s principal surgeons the following year. Cheselden was known for his swift and skillful operations; he could perform a lithotomy in 54 seconds. He was, in 1727, the first surgeon to extract bladder stones using the lateral approach, a technique invented by him and soon used by other surgeons.
