ग्रीक तत्त्ववेत्ता सॉक्रेटिस याची जीवनमूल्ये आणि त्या मूल्यांकरिता त्याने स्वीकारलेले वीरमरण या सूत्रावर बेतलेल्या ‘सूर्य पाहिलेला माणूस’ या नाटकाला अनेक पदर आहेत.

नाटक सुरू होते ते तीन व्यक्तींच्या संभाषणाने. या तीन व्यक्तींना, त्यांच्या संभाषणाला कुठल्याही काळाचे, ठिकाणचे संदर्भ नाहीत. त्यांच्या वरकरणी खटकेबाज अशा संवादांतून दिसायला लागतात त्या, ते ज्या प्रवृत्तीचे प्रतिनिधित्व करतात त्या प्रवृत्ती. कुणी सिनिकल तर कुणी भाबडा, कुणी बेरकी तर कुणी सरळ धारेचा. कुणी विदुषकी उपरोधातून आयुष्याची वैयर्थता प्रकट करणारा, तर कुणी आपली बाजू हिरीरीने मांडणारा… आणि आपली बाजू म्हणजे तरी कसली बाजू? त्याला राजकीय, सामाजिक असा कुठलाच संदर्भ नाही. मात्र या प्रवेशातून ‘आंधळे आणि हत्ती’ हे रूपक ठसवले जाते. आणि साऱ्या ज्ञानशाखा ज्या प्रश्नाकडे वळतात, त्या प्रश्नांच्या समेवर हा प्रवेश येतो. हे प्रश्न कुठले? तर ‘हे सारे काय आहे?’, ‘या साऱ्याचा अर्थ तरी काय?’, ‘सत्य म्हणजे काय?’, ‘सत्याचे आणि आपले नाते काय?’ हे आणि असे प्रश्न.

सत्याबद्दलच्या या मूलभूत प्रश्नोपनिषदाला अगदी अलगद अशी एका प्रखर अशा प्रकाश-स्रोताची रूपकात्मकता नकळत मिळून जाते; आणि मग जाणवते, या साऱ्या बोलणाऱ्या माणसांना संदर्भ आहे तो प्लेटोच्या ‘डायलॉग्ज’मधील चिरंतन गुहांचा, त्यातील आदिम अंधारात चाचपडणाऱ्या प्रकाशरूपी सत्याच्या शोधाचा.

‘सत्य म्हणजे काय? त्याचे आपले नाते काय? सत्यासारखी दाहक, अतिप्रखर गोष्ट कुणी पळवली आहे काय? अशा मालिकेतून गोष्ट सुरू होते ती सत्यापासून न चाललेल्या, ‘सूर्य पाहिलेल्या माणसाची’, सॉक्रेटिसची.

तत्कालीन ग्रीक संस्कृतीचा इतिहास हा अतिमर्यादित लोकशाही आणि दडपशाही राजसत्ता यांच्या रस्सीखेचीचा इतिहास आहे. अतिशय मर्यादित अशा वैचारिक स्वातंत्र्याच्या या कालखंडात सॉक्रेटिस मात्र अथेन्समधील तरुणांना सतत आपल्या तत्त्वशोध पद्धतीने सत्याचा मागोवा घेण्यास उद्युक्त करीत होता. विद्यार्थी, मित्र आणि अमीर-उमरावांच्या वर्गातील अनेक तरुण त्याच्या विचारांनी प्रभावित होत होते. प्लेटोने ग्रंथीत केलेल्या या सर्व संवादांमधून ‘श्रेयसा’च्या शोधाचे, ते प्राप्त करण्यासाठीच्या वादविवादप्रधान अशा मंथनाचे दर्शन घडते. प्रत्येक गोष्टीला तार्किक, अतिकठोर अशा तात्त्विक भिंगाखाली घालण्यास तरुण पिढीस उद्युक्त करणाऱ्या या माणसामुळे लोकशाहीच्या बुरख्याआडून निरंकुश सत्ता उपभोगू पाहणाऱ्या तत्कालीन राज्यकर्त्यांची झोप न उडती तरच नवल. अथेन्सतर्फे सॉक्रेटीसवर रीतसर खटला भरण्यात आला. ग्रीक दैवतांची पायमल्ली आणि अथेन्सच्या युवकांना चिथावणे असे दुहेरी आरोप त्याच्यावर लावले गेले. या खटल्याच्या दरम्यान सॉक्रेटिसने आपल्या विरोधकांची त्याने केलेली उलटतपासणी, त्यांच्या प्रत्येक आरोपाचे खंडन आदी भागातून सॉक्रेटिसची न्याय्य बाजू सिद्ध तर झालीच आहे; पण या खटल्याच्या अखेरीस सॉक्रेटिसने केलेल्या निवेदनात त्याने आयुष्यभर केलेल्या तपःश्चर्येचे जणू सारच एकवटले आहे. Some of them show the futility of life through funny jokes, and some of them present their side with pride... and what kind of side is their side? It has no political or social context. But the metaphor of 'blind men and elephants' is imprinted on this entry. And this entry comes at the same time as the questions to which all branches of knowledge turn. What are these questions? So questions such as 'What is all this?', 'What is the meaning of all this?', 'What is truth?', 'What is the relationship between truth and us?'

This basic question about truth is unwittingly met with an allegory of an intense source of light; And then one realizes, all these talking men refer to the eternal caves of Plato's 'Dialogues', to the search for truth in the form of light that probes the primordial darkness.

What is truth? What is his relationship with you? Has anyone run away with something as inflammatory and intense as the truth? One such series begins with the untruthful, 'man who has seen the sun', Socrates.

The history of Greek culture at that time is a history of a tug-of-war between extreme democracy and oppressive monarchy. During this period of very limited intellectual freedom, Socrates, however, was constantly urging the youth of Athens to pursue the truth through his philosophical method. Students, friends and many youths from the class of Amir-Umrao were influenced by his ideas. All these dialogues of Plato in the Grantha show the search for 'credit', the controversial churning to achieve it. It would be no wonder if the then rulers who tried to enjoy autocratic power under the veil of democracy did not lose sleep because of this man who urged the young generation to put everything under a logical and very strict theoretical lens. Socrates was duly prosecuted by Athens. He was charged with the dual charge of desecrating the Greek gods and inciting the youth of Athens. In the course of this trial, Socrates' cross-examination of his opponents, his refutation of each of their accusations, etc., proves Socrates' just side; But the statement Socrates makes at the end of this trial seems to sum up his lifelong penance.
