कालाधिष्ठीत कथावस्तू, कथानकविकासाचे निश्चित टप्पे, घटनाबहुलता आणि रहस्यप्रधानता ही वैशिष्ट्ये असूनही जी. ए. यांची कथा कथानकनिष्ठ होत नाही. याचे अंतिम कारण, त्यांच्या कथेचा प्रतीकात्मक धर्म, कथावस्तूचा कालानुक्रमापेक्षा त्या घटनांचा अनुभव घेणारे मन चित्रित करणे अधिक अगत्याचे वाटते.  जी. ए. अनेक व्यक्तींना, अनेक घटनांना सारखेच महत्त्व देतात. ह्या साऱ्या कथावस्तूंचा, व्यक्तींचा आणि घटनांचा मोहरा प्रतीकात्मक अर्थाकडे असतो. हा प्रतीकात्मक अर्थ विधानातून, विवेचनातून, विचारातून भाष्यातून आविष्कृत न होता जीवनानुभवाच्या हाताळणीतून, जीवनानुभवातील विविध घटकांच्या परस्पर संबंधातून प्रतीत होतो. ‘राधी’, ‘वस्त्र’, ‘पराभव’ अशा जीएंच्या काही गाजलेल्या कथा या संग्रहात वाचायला मिळतात.
