नीरजा ह्या प्रामुख्याने कवयित्री म्हणून परिचित असलेल्या लेखिकेचा हा कथासंग्रह. प्रत्येक कथेत निराळेच अवकाश चितारणारा आहे. ह्या संग्रहात असलेल्या दहा कथा सांकेतिक नात्यातल्या असांकेतिक अन् अवघड वळणाच्या वाटा चोखाळतात. नात्यांचे अंत:स्तर अधिक जाणकारीने तपासतात. नीरजाचे सर्वांत मोठे यश म्हणजे स्त्रीवादी पूर्वग्रहाचा स्वागतार्ह अभाव. स्त्रीला केंद्रस्थानी ठेवणाऱ्या असूनही ह्या कथा स्त्रीवादी एकांगी भूमिकेने विचार करत नाहीत, पुरुषाबद्दल रूढ चीड वा पूर्वग्रह नाहीत, आहे ते मनोवृत्ती शोधत जायचे अपार प्रामाणिक कुतूहल. शिवाय कथांत नव्या स्त्रीचा मोकळेपणा अन् खुलेपणा आहे. पण अनाठायी भाषिक वा वैचारिक धाडस नाही. प्रवाहाला विरोध करायची तयारी आहे, पण त्यात आक्रस्ताळेपणा अथवा कांगावेखोरपणाही नाही. स्त्रीच्या लैंगिकतेला आहे तसे स्वीकारण्याची तयारी आहे. पण त्याचे भांडवल करून लक्ष वेधायची धडपड नाही. नीरजाचे हल्ले प्रवृत्तींवर असतात, व्यक्तींवर नव्हे आणि जातींवर तर त्याहूनही नव्हे. ह्या अर्थाने नीरजाची चांगली वागणारी आणि चुका करणारी पात्रे प्रातिनिधिक असतात त्या प्रवृत्तींची. स्त्री-पुरुष, हिंदू-मुसलमान अशा कसल्याच जातींची वा समूहांची नव्हे. निराळ्या शब्दांत सांगायचे तर कथेच्याच बांधणीत नीरजा व्यक्ती अन् प्रवृत्तीचे संतुलन करते. आणि तिची कथा तोलन ढळलेली होते..

नीरजाच्या कथा फक्त काळ्या-पांढऱ्या रंगांत माणसे चितारत नाहीत. अधल्या मधल्या अनेकविध रंगछटांची मनोवेधक चित्रे रेखाटता रेखाटता वाचकाला त्यात सामील करून सूचकतेने संपतात. किंबहुना संपत नाहीतच. वाचकांच्या मनात चालूच राहतात. कथांच्या शीर्षकांमध्ये नीरजामधली कवयित्री अगदी ठळक होते. अत्यंत समर्पक शीर्षकाच्या ह्या कथा मानवी जीवनाचे मधले स्तर आत्मीयतेने तपासतात.

Neeraja's stories are not just black and white. Adhalia draws the mind-blowing pictures of the various hues in between and draws the reader in, ending suggestively. In fact, they do not end. remain in the minds of the readers. The poetess in Neerja was very prominent in the titles of the stories. These aptly titled stories intimately examine the middle ground of human life.
