About the Book:-The author has made a noble attempt to explore the intricacies of the Grammar which is considered to be the backbone of a language. The grammar of a language is the art of speaking or writing it with propriety by acquiring knowledge of the different parts of speech, and the structure of sentences; and it helps us to understand the literature of the language. Each language must have its own grammar. Although some ancient languages have not possessed perfect Grammars, owing to the uncivilized condition and insufficiency of mental culture of the people who spoke them, the two languages Pali and Sanskrit possess such Grammars, which is a proof of the preeminence in this respect. It appears that Pali Grammars have been composed on the model of the Sanskrit. It must be critically studied by one who would understand its literature generally and still more so by one who would penetrate into the abstruse doctrines of Buddhism, which exhibit the pure wisdom of its Founder. Śrī Waskaduwe Subhūti, who was a Pali scholar of great distinction, compiled the Pali Nigaṇḍuwa with English and Sinhalese equivalents. It was printed at the Government Printing Press in 1864. The “Nāmamālā”, a work of considerable size, was also written by this priest. It was published in 1876. The book was dedicated and presented to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) when he arrived in Ceylon that year. At this time the scholarship of Ven. Śrī Subhūti was known all over the world and scholars like Professor Fausböll, Max Müller, and Childers held him in very high esteem.
