Product description
About the Book :-This is an English translation of the author, written in German sometime ago. In the winter of 1892-93, the famous Sanskrit Professor and his wife travelled in India under exceptionally favourable circumstances. This travelogue written by him, recounts his journey in India and very briefly in Ceylon undertaken in 1892-93. He travelled from Bombay to Peshawar then to Calcutta further into the Himalayas then back to Bombay. In recording his impressions of his trip to India, and thus presenting them to the public, he has yielded to the wishes of his friends, partly because, notwithstanding the shortness of his stay in India, he was enabled, being favoured by circumstances, to get a deeper insight into the life of the natives than a European usually gets ; partly too because his opinion of Indian life and manners differs widely from that universally accepted, more particularly because, unlike most other people, he has not viewed the Indian land and people through the eyes and interests of the English, nor is he in the habit of kneeling before the golden calf of success, and prone to underrate a weaker cause merely because victory does not chance to be upon its side. About the Author :-Paul Jakob Deussen was a German Indologist and professor of Philosophy at University of Kiel. Strongly influenced by Arthur Schopenhauer, Deussen was a friend of Friedrich Nietzsche and Swami Vivekananda. He, who Sanskritised his name to "Deva-Sena" as a mark of his admiration for Hinduism, is one of the distinguished roll of Europeans who — often with lyrical admiration — participated in the scholarly Western discovery of Sanskrit and Hinduism that took place in British India itself, Germany, France and England.
