About the Book: - The author of this book has made a noble attempt to portray the real picture of a contemporary account of the then king of Afghanistan, Dost Mohammad Khan and offers eyewitness accounts of the dealings of this king with the political proceedings of the British, Persian and Russian governments. This was the time when Alexander ‘Bokahra’ Burns, the British Resident in Kabul, was assassinated by a mob a few years ago and there were many resultant military debacles that the British army was involved in. Apart from this, the political and military tension of this time also is discussed well by the writer of these two volumes. He prepared the text in both English and Persian after collecting data from the courtiers and relations of Dost Mohammed Khan. The anecdotes inserted in the work, and especially in reference to the adventures and morals of the main protagonist, were generally communicated to him by the people with whom he associated. The author was the secretary of Alexander Burns which helped him to collect the data from these sources. There are 19 portraits of the principal players, both Afghan and English, in this set of both the volumes. So, the book is good for the historians and readers. About the Author: - Mohan Lal Zutshi KLS (popularly known as Mohan Lal Kashmiri; 1812 – 1877) was an Indian traveller, diplomat, and author. He played a central role in the First Anglo-Afghan War of 1838–1842. His biography of Dost Mohammad Khan, the emir of Kabul, is a primary source on the War. His wife Hyderi Begum was a Muslim scholar. He retired at the age of 32, disappointed that he had not been properly rewarded for his singular contributions to the British cause in the First Anglo-Afghan War.
