‘हायकू’ हा मूळ जपानी काव्यप्रकार. जपानी हायकूचा तिथल्या निसर्गाशी जसा संबंध आहे तसाच तो बौद्ध धर्मातील झेन तत्त्वज्ञानाशीही आहे. मात्र असे असूनही या विलक्षण काव्यप्रकारात भाषिक आणि भौगोलिक मर्यादा ओलांडून जाण्याची क्षमता आहे. रवींद्रनाथ टागोरांनी हा काव्यप्रकार बंगाली भाषेत रुजवला तसाच तो हिंदी, पंजाबी याही भाषांमध्ये रुजला. हायकू मराठी भाषेत रुजवण्याचे श्रेय कवयित्री शिरीष पै यांचेकडे जाते. तीन ओळीचे बंधन पाळूनही निसर्ग, प्रेम आणि अध्यात्म यांच्याशी जोडून घेत लिहिल्या गेलेल्या मराठी हायकूला स्वतःचे वेगळे वैशिष्ट्य दाखवता आले. Haiku is the original form of Japanese poetry. The Japanese haiku is as closely related to nature as it is to the Zen philosophy of Buddhism. However, despite this, this unique form of poetry has the ability to transcend linguistic and geographical boundaries. Just as Rabindranath Tagore introduced this form of poetry in Bengali language, it also took root in Hindi and Punjabi languages. Poet Shirish Pai is credited with introducing haiku in Marathi language. Marathi haiku, which was written in connection with nature, love and spirituality, could show its own unique characteristics despite following the three-line restriction.
