Early Language and Literacy : Introduction and Overview (Booklet 1)

This booklet introduces certain foundational ideas related to the teaching and learning of language and literacy. The first brief argues that the children learn LSRW (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing) skills simultaneously, thus challenging the prevailing the idea that they develop sequentially. The second brief discusses the idea and importance of "print-rich" classrooms and also suggest some ideas for creating such environment in the classrooms. The third one introduces the "comprehensive" model of literacy instruction, while the final one describes "emergent literacy", and the ways of addressing it in the early language learning environments
