About the Book:-Ananda Ranga Pillai was a courtier of F. Dupleix, and maintained a diary of the happenings and events of the French in India for about 25 Years from 1736 to 1760. The complete work (also available under AES imprint) is in 12 volumes and is an indispensable source for the history of Southern India. This work is a narrative, complied from the 12 volume work. It has 20 chapters and 3 appendices that describe the principal persons, events, wars, and engagements of the French in Southern India. Among the chapters, we find noticed La Bourdonnais, capture of Madras, operation round Cuddalore and Pondicherry, Chanda Sahab, Dupleix, Leyrit, Godeheu, Bussy, and the fall of Pondicherry. There is a map of Pondicherry and its surrounding county at the end of the book. About the Author :-Ananda Ranga Pillai was a dubash in the service of the French East India Company. He is mainly famous for his set of private diaries from the years 1736 to 1761 which portray life in 18th century India. He is also remembered for developing the Tiruvengadam courtage strategy, a new method of courtage in India that is popularly described in several Indian economic books. As described in his journals, it consists in developing a strategy of making new fraud coins in a parallel economy. Pillai's diaries were translated in the early 20th century and bring to light life in the mid-18th century and the Anglo-French Carnatic wars. His mansion in Pondicherry has been recognized as a heritage monument. C. S. Srinivasachari, a prominent Indian historian, described Ananda Ranga Pillai as the ‘Samuel Pepys of French India’.
