About the Book: - Writing this Diary of a Tour through Oude (Awadh) was to prepare, for submission to the Government of India, as fair and full a picture of the real estate of the country, condition, and feeling of the people of all classes, and character of the Government under which they at present live, as the opportunities which the tour afforded him might enable him to draw. The Diary must, for the present, be considered as an official document, which may be perused, but cannot be published, wholly or in part, without the sanction of the Government previously obtained. Through this Diary, the author has prepared both the volumes and the details of private correspondence in regard to the annexation of Oude (Awadh) has discussed in the second volume to make the book meaningful and informative. The subject of the book is very illuminating and historic. About the Author: Major-general Sir William Henry Sleeman was a British soldier and administrator in British India. He is best known for his work from the 1830s in suppressing the organized criminal gangs known as Thuggee. In 1820 he was selected for civil employ, and became junior assistant to the Governor-General's agent in the Saugor (Sagar) and Nerbudda (Narmada) territories. In 1822 he was placed in charge of Narsinghpur District, and would later describe his two years in the role as by far the most laborious of his life.He was gazetted to the rank of Captain in 1825, and in 1828 assumed charge of Jubbulpore (Jabalbur) District. In 1831 he transferred to Sagar district to cover for a colleague on leave. Upon his colleague's return, Sleeman continued with magisterial duties in Sagar until 1835.
